The back channel works. Get enough people in the same interest area together in the one place at the one time, and they will mingle, interact and talk.
There is a very simple reason for this: people share because they believe they will get something back of equal or greater value. They know those that they talk to probably know something they don't, or have a different perspective on a tool or an issue, and this knowledge is valuable.
The BOMM Idea
The Brisbane Online Marketing Meetup is just a back channel. No speakers, no structure, and no moderators, closer to a scaled down Unconference with better food than an event. Just an excuse to get Online Marketing professionals together for a meal and a few drinks every month or so. It's an opportunity to network, chat and dine rolled into the one relaxed evening out.
